Focus Speaker

I took a 4 week product design summer class at Pratt Institute and one of the assignments was to design a portable Bluetooth speaker inspired by a designer - I was assigned Dieter Rams.

The speaker I designed, pictured left, has a slot in the top for your phone to encourage the user to fully enjoy the music instead of being distracted by a screen, and secondly to display the music they are listening to.

My process

First, I had to research Dieter Rams' design ideology so that I could understand how to create something with his influence. He liked simple shapes and interfaces, and felt that the more minimal and unobtrusive design was, the better it was.  I also learned that his motto was "less, but better" - this would influence me throughout the whole process.

I sketched loosely for a while to come up with forms I liked.

Finally, I came up with a form I liked. It was simple, sleek, and unobstrusive - qualities present in Dieter Rams' work. I made 2 presentational drawings, one orthographic one and one to show its use and features.

I modeled the speaker using foamcore and cardboard.

I added foamcore supports in the body
